Next steps

16 03 2011

As some of you know, I’m pushing 50 years of age. Most people have one ‘mid-life’ crisis in a lifetime. Strangely, I seem to have them every few years. Maybe it’s due to my curious nature in that I LOVE to learn about new things and new people. As far as jobs go, I often go into a job, take it till I ‘finally’ figure out that it’s not going to take me any further and then move on.

Well, it seems that the time has come to maybe look into moving on to my next life step.

Steps... where am I heading?

Granted, I love teaching but with most things in my life (other than my loving and VERY tolerant wife), I want to do it on my terms and mine alone. It’s been that way my entire life. One reason might be due my parents early deaths but it could be other things, my age (my mid-life crisis possibly), situational, etc. I’m not sure. However, since last years accident, I’ve grown ever more restless in wanting to set my own course. Not only that, but we Clevelands (especially the males) aren’t known for our bullshit tolerance and that trait kicks in on nearly a daily basis.

Honestly, I’m not sure what that means for me. Does it mean attempting to start SpōK as a business or to get mountain guide training and then hope that I can get a license? Possibly, it could also mean that I go back to freelancing and try to cobble together a living from doing two or three things? These are the questions I’ve spent hundreds of hours contemplating during bike rides and while lying awake nights and have yet to achieve any ‘real’ answers.

I know that I’m a good, if not really good teacher. It shows in my students scores and their feedbacks. Also, in the number of them that renew or ask me to teach them privately (which I can’t/won’t do for ethical and lack of time reasons). My guess is that freelancing might be a good start along with SpōK and maybe, just maybe I might check into SPIN training as well. Kera always tells me that I’m a shitty relaxer, maybe I should take that as a sign and do something active.

Hindsight is 20/20 as they say. If only I had known this 30 years ago I could and would have had my outdoor career and could now pass that accumulated knowledge on to others.

Alas, I’m left wondering the age old question of “what am I here to achieve?”

A FEW DAYS AFTER STARTING THIS ENTRY…..

After speaking with Kera about it, I’ve come to the conclusion that I should kick up the pace on trying to get SpōK off the ground as a legit business. I’ve never tried to run a business of my own but I think that it’s time that I try it. As some of you know, I’m not good with failure so the jump forward is not only scary, the future is more so. However, Kera and I are pretty good at putting our heads, hearts and skills together to come up with some pretty cool ideas. Combined with that, as I get to thinking about potential things to produce, my creative nature goes into overdrive. Seems that I need to start carrying around a sketchbook for all my ideas otherwise they may pop into being and vanish like a soap bubble.

Last thing… Saturday is 8 months + 1 day from my accident. On that day, I’m having surgery to remove the plates that were installed in July of 2010. The doctor says that there shouldn’t be any complications but please cross your fingers for me if you would.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Well, as usual, I’m a day late (or so) and a dollar/Euro short. MERRY CHRISTMAS to much of the world and a belated Fröliche Weihnachten to our friends here in Europe (particularly those in German speaking countries).

For my family back in the States…. I’ve got presents for many of you, but I actually haven’t finished shopping so you’ll be getting many of your Christmas presents as quasi Presidents Day presents or something to that affect. Many apologies to you for that.

We’re on a 5 day break here in Germany. For those that I haven’t mentioned this to before, the 24th is the big day for everyone here. Stores are only open till about noon and then the world shuts down for about 3 full days. For those of us from North America, it can be pretty much a yearly shock to the system as we’re so used to almost 24/7 shopping. In this part of the world though, you’ve got to stock up on groceries for the 5 days (and somehow fit it into a tiny European refrigerator and nearly non-existent freezer) and wait it out. On Saturday, the stores will be open, but they’ll still be cleaned out from Wednesday mornings craziness. Then, they’ll close for Sunday and be open for a couple of days only to close again for New Years.

This cycle repeats itself for the next few weeks. Ah…life in the most Catholic part of Germany! Granted, it’s not all bad in that we get more holidays than any other part of Germany and in turn, we get time off to go do the things that we love to do (i.e. cycling, hiking, traveling, snowshoeing and the like). In fact, this time last year, we were just beginning our 3.5 week trip around Vietnam. Seems like only yesterday or maybe the week before.

Kiss-Kiss

It's a lot of work....

Today we took our brand new snowshoes and poles down to Lenggries and Brauneck for a day of playing around in the snow. Our location in town puts us close to a train station that goes directly out of town toward the mountains. It’s called the BOB (Bayerische Oberland Bahn). The best part is that it generally goes very close to where we want to be anyway so we don’t have to drive or worry about traffic. Pretty awesome! Here’s a link to the photos.

We’ll be going back out on the weekend as there should be a bunch more snow in the mountains and it’s getting colder so it ought to stick around awhile too. The thought is to maybe head down either a bit closer to Innsbruck or Salzburg and get higher up in elevation. Don’t worry… more photos to come when we go.

Lastly and maybe most importantly, I know that I’m really a shit when it comes to communicating with friends and family back home. Having said that, believe me, I think of you very often. You’ll just have to trust me on that one. I figure that if I haven’t learned to pick up the phone at age 46, it’s probably not going to be something I start doing anytime soon. In any case, I love you guys and miss you.

Kera’s far better at that sort of communication but I know that she misses friends and family back home as well.

One last time…. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

More hiking… Wendelstein and more stuff

14 11 2008

We just can’t seem to stop ourselves. Last weekend, we went back out to the mountains by ourselves for a couple of reasons. One was to try out the Bayerischer Oberland Bahn (BOB) and the other was just to get the hell out of town. We really had no real idea of where or what we were going to do other than go hiking.

At one of the train stops I saw a beautiful mountain peak out the window of the train and said that I’d love to go there sometime. As it turns out at the last stop, Bayerischerzell, we could see the same mountain. Therefore, that became our goal. It turns out that it’s called Wendelstein and you basically hike up 1250 meters from the train station to the top. Not bad for a days work.

Sadly, the photos don’t do it justice. In any case, click on our photo to go to the pics on Flickr.

A couple of interesting finds (the first thanks a buddy Rat Trap Press).

I found the flowing video really funny. Hope that you enjoy it as well.

Ths site has some incredibly nice creations, bike , motorcycle, art, etc. Click on the photo to go there.

More pics of it here. I’d so love to have a bike like this. I just can’t imagine how fun this must be.

Check out a cool new-ish website guyswhocuttheirownhair.com it’s not what you think. You’ll see stuff like this video there as well as the bike above.

Bike parts as art….

This is beautiful and read more about it by clicking the picture or going to KO5.

The mothership has landed

I got a message late a couple of nights ago that the new Black Sheep frame has arrived in Germany! Woohoo!

I’m going to pick it up from my buddy this weekend at a race that we’re both attending.

Crazy busy with classes right now. Not to mention, I often have 3 separate classes a day in 3 different parts of the city. That means 3 different levels and in total about 2 hours of travel time. It means basically that I have have about 2 or so hours off between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. Phew! Granted, it’s a good problem (being busy, just exhausting).

Still no word on my Deutsch test. I need to give them a call or go by today and check in.

It’s really crappy out today. I’d planned to go for a ride, but I’m not sure that I’ll manage it given that it’s raining off/on and it’s close to freezing. Yuck! Instead, I’m hanging light fixtures and pictures as well as doing laundry and cleaning house. Fun eh?

Christmas markets open this weekend so we might go see them. That’s about all the news.
